Mark Webber on The Grand Tour

Mark Webber, the former Australian Formula One driver who retired from the sport after losing four consecutive championships to teammate Sebastian Vettel and definitely wasn’t bitter about it, is featured in a video released today by The Grand Tour ahead of the show’s second season.

After having dropped Mike “The American” Skinner as its star driver, TGT has been looking for a new racing driver who could test the show’s cars and put in quick lap times around the “Eboladrome” for purposes of comparison.

As per the comedy script, only Jeremy Clarkson could quite remember Webber’s name or who he was; Richard Hammond and James May, meanwhile, both seemed to think he was talking about Tom Hardy or Daniel Ricciardo—the latter another Australian Formula One driver, one more popular and generally considered faster.

Waxing Your Car: How to do it the easy way

Webber was and is, of course, no slouch behind the wheel of a racing car. The worst Formula One drivers are still among the best in the world. On his best days, even Vettel couldn’t match him; and in 2010, Webber had been one of four drivers to arrive at the last race of the season with a chance to win it all.

After F1, Webber moved on to the World Endurance Championship, which he won in 2015 with Porsche. The Aussie has now retired but continues to represent Porsche as a brand ambassador…which turned out to be a bit of an issue: in the video, Webber is asked to set some timed laps as part of his audition. The first car he drives is a new Porsche GT2 RS; the second is a Mercedes-AMG GT R. You can probably guess what happened next…
