Mazda’s latest redesign baby is the CX-9, a three-row mid-size crossover that the company revealed with much pomp and fanfare (plus leaked images ahead of time) at the LA Auto Show back in November. It is designed especially to appeal to North American buyers, especially “mature families.”

So, four months later, Mazda has announced the price of the CX-9, which will go on sale this spring with a starting MSRP of $31,520. That is for the lowest trim level, the CX-9 Sport. Above that are the CX-9 Touring (MSRP $35,970), the CX-9 Grand Touring (MSRP $40,170), and the CX-9 Signature (MSRP $44,015).

Both the Sport and Touring models come with dedicated packages, with the Sport Package (for $950) adding a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and heated door mirrors; and the Touring Premium Package (for $1,745) adding automatic on/off headlights, LED fog lights, navigation, a 12-speaker Bose® audio system, rain-sensing wipers, rear backup sensors, second-row retractable sunshades, SiriusXM satellite radio, automatic Smart City Brake Support, and a sunroof.

We won’t get full feature information until closer to release time, but that really makes it seem like higher trim levels are pretty well-equipped, and the base model is…less so (since the base model has an optional package to add a power driver’s seat).

All CX-9 models come with a brand new turbocharged SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter engine, which produces 310 lb-ft of torque and 227 hp, although the latter figure jumps to 250 hp if you fill the tank with 93-octane gas. Whichever gas type you choose, though, the CX-9 still produces the best fuel economy in its class, delivering 22 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined (EPA estimates).

This engine comes standard with Mazda’s SKYACTIV-DRIVE six-speed automatic transmission, and is available in front-wheel drive or i-ACTIV all-wheel drive, although all-wheel drive adds $1,800 to each price on every trim level except the Signature, on which all-wheel drive already comes standard.
