2017 Mazda CX-5

The CX-5 is really the darling of the Mazda lineup lately—it received a full redesign just nine months ago, and since has very firmly staked its claim as the brand’s best-selling model.

So, it seems fitting that the brand’s first update of the model would be impressive. For the 2018 model year, the CX-5 is getting a number of upgrades across its range of trim levels.

More Mazda: The new Mazda3 is more than just a daily driver

The first change is a very small price increase, of just $100, for a starting MSRP of $24,150.

In addition, Mazda is introducing something very unique: cylinder-deactivation on its SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter engine, making it the only automaker to offer the technology on a four-cylinder engine. The engine also received some minor tweaks meant to reduce internal friction.

Then, when it comes to features, the base Sport trim level adds some small comfort features—a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob—but more interestingly adds Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert as standard.

One step up with the Touring trim, the CX-5 is upgrading its wheels to 19-inch alloy wheels, its seats with leatherette upholstery, and its systems with Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry. Again, though, the largest upgrade comes with the addition of active safety technology—the CX-5 Touring now comes with the full spread of i-ACTIVSENSE safety features.

Finally, the top-trim CX-5 Grand Touring gets new two-position memory driver’s seat and a six-way power adjustable passenger seat.

The new 2018 CX-5 is set to go on sale nationwide at the start of December.
