Two Mazda vehicles have been named as the recipients of top honors in the New York Daily News’ 2018 Daily News Auto (or DNA) Awards, something that the brand is hardly a stranger to since the awards started in 2016 with a blitz of Mazda winners.

More Accolades: Mazda’s Vision Coupe has won the “Concept Car of the Year” award

The 2018 DNA award winners, chosen by the Daily News editors, are chosen from 16 different vehicle segments. To be considered, vehicles must have a base price under $100,000, be 2018 model-year vehicles, and have gone on sale by February 1st. Winners are chosen because the editors feel they best represent the “DNA” of the segment. This means they must contain the core requirements to exist in a given segment, and also have superior design, engineering, innovation, value, and “dynamism.”

The two Mazdas chosen for the awards are the 2018 Mazda CX-5 and the 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata, winning “Best Small SUV” and “Best Performance Car,” respectively.

The CX-5 already has a large collection of awards, from a place on Car and Driver’s “10Best Trucks and SUVs” list, a spot on WardsAuto’s “10 Best UX” list, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick awards. The CX-5’s success with reviewers mirrors its success on the showroom floor, as the CX-5 is by far the best-selling Mazda in North America.

The 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata is no real surprise to win the “Best Performance Car” award. It has raked in award after prestigious award ever since its redesign for the 2016 model year, especially after adding an attractive hard-top version with a retractable targa-top-style roof.
