Mazda Gives Sneak Peek at SEMA Concepts
Last year, Mazda came to SEMA with two new MX-5 Miata concepts: the Speedster and Spyder concepts, both designed for swift operation. So, this year, Mazda decided that you can’t get too much of a good thing, and is again bringing two MX-5 Miata concepts, both taking style and speed pointers from the MX-5 Global Cup racecar.
The first of the two is actually a build on the first of last year’s concepts: the MX-5 Speedster Evolution concept. This model originally took the base Miata’s emphasis on light weight and stretched it further. However, the Evolution model goes even farther to reduce weight, bringing the total weight down another 100 pounds from last year. Now, the Speedster Evolution rests very lightly at just under 2,000 pounds, about 350 pounds lighter than a stock soft-top Miata.

The second MX-5 concept builds on the soon-to-be-released Mazda MX-5 RF, the hard-top Miata. This concept is called the MX-5 RF Kuro concept, and is painted a new semi-matte metallic concept color, appropriately named “Kuro,” or “charcoal” in Japanese. The MX-5 RF Kuro also received a set of RAYS forged wheels, BFGoodrich Rival G-Forsce tires, and the same adjustable suspension used in the Battery Tender Global Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BFGoodrich.
Both concepts were created by Mazda Design Americas to represent opposite design directions that still create a “Mazda Premium” experience and pay homage to Mazda’s racing heritage. Both will be on display at the Mazda booth in the SEMA Show from November 1st-4th.
