SKYACTIV-D Diesel Engine

So close. We were surprised at the first part of that headline as well, especially given that Mazda‘s managing executive officer in charge of research and development and cost innovation Kiyoshi Fujiwara specifically told us that the release of the Skyactiv diesel engine, originally planned for 2016, is going to be delayed due to the VW diesel scandal.

So, no, unfortunately, the US will still not be getting a Mazda diesel for a while. Instead, to boost sales in the UK, Mazda will be adding a 1.5-liter Skyactiv-D diesel engine to the Mazda3, producing 103 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque, in either the hatchback or fastback versions, and delivering a highly impressive 74.3 mpg UK (that’s a little over 60 mpg to us).

Decide for Yourself: Compare the Mazda3 with the Ford Focus

The engine is specially designed with high dispersion fuel injectors, a low compression ratio, and a uniquely-shaped combustion chamber, all of which contribute to the engine’s high efficiency and performance figures.

So, if you find yourself in the UK and craving a compact diesel, you can certainly pick up a new Mazda3, decked with the 1.5-liter Skyactiv-D for £18,895, or $28,448.78 in the US.
