Mazda Issues Two Recalls for 2004-2008 RX-8s

Mazda today is probably pretty happy that it no longer makes the RX-8. It had some real emissions and heat problems, eventually leading to the discontinuation of the brand’s most iconic engine, the rotary. However, the RX-8 is still causing the brand some headaches, as it is now the subject of two fairly serious recalls.

Seriously, Get a New Mazda: The new MX-5 is so much better

The first affects certain RX-8s from the model years 2004 to 2008. In these vehicles, heat from the engine and exhaust—which, in a rotary engine, can be pretty substantial—may eventually cause a crack in the main fuel pump pipe, leading to a fuel leak and increased risk of a fire.

Mazda said that there haven’t been any accidents or injuries reported due to this, and the recall affects a total of 69,447 vehicles.

The second recall is only for certain RX-8 models from the 2004 model year. In this case, the ball joint socket on the front suspension’s lower control arm could crack, causing the ball joint to come out of the socket. This, while driving, would be very bad, and could lead to loss of steering control as the wheel does its own thing, increasing the risk of a crash.

Again, Mazda adds that there have been no reported accidents or injuries related to this recall, although it affects 35,332 vehicles.

Remember, if you aren’t sure whether or not your Mazda has a recall open on it, Mazda has created a recall information center for you to go and double-check.
