2018 Mazda CX-3

Overall, Mazda sales figures in North America recently have been following a trend—overall, things decline a bit (mostly due to passenger cars sales dropping), despite crossover sales (actually, mainly the CX-5 and CX-9) rising.

This November, trend, for the most part, continued.

Overall, sales decreased 2.6% compared to November last year, putting the year-to-date sales down 2.4% compared to this time last year. The sales drop was led by the Mazda6, which last month was being teased for a revamp and only posted sales of 1,651 units, a 45.8% drop from last year. The Mazda3 followed along after its larger sibling in spirit if not degree, with a sales drop of 26.3% at 4,708 units.

On the other hand, sales of everything else was up, up, up—the Miata saw a lovely boost of 25.8% to 487 sales, while the CX-3, CX-5, and CX-9 saw sales jumps of 11.7%, 19.7%, and 25.3%, respectively. Together, the CX line of vehicles sold 14,623 models, an increase of 19.7% over last year.

The surprise among those is the CX-3, which for some time has been dragging behind the other crossovers—back in October, it posted a significant sales decrease of 17.5%, while in September it had a much smaller drop of 4%. Mazda hasn’t offered a reason for the boost of CX-3 sales, but one possible factor is that the upgraded CX-3 started making its way to dealerships in September, so by November they may have reached more dealerships, both attracting buyers with upgraded features and pushing down prices of the 2017 models on the lot.

In any case, Mazda’s i-ACTIV all-wheel drive system continues to be a hit among buyers, with 64.4% of buyers picking up that option when available, and Mazda’s Certified Pre-Owned program continues its upward march with 3,721 sales, an increase of 44.6%.

As a final thought,  Mazda Motor de Mexico recorded its best-ever November last month, selling 5,957 vehicles for an increase of 15.2% versus last year.
