Certain 2014 Mazda3 and 2014-15 Mazda6 models are being recalled for possible issues with the Power Control module (PCM)

Mazda has issued a recall affecting certain 2014 Mazda3 models manufactured between June 12, 2013 and December 18, 2013, and certain 2014 Mazda6 models manufactured from May 20, 2013 to December 4, 2013. The 5,700 vehicles, all equipped with a 2.5-liter engine and a regenerative braking system, are being recalled for an issue that may occur when these particular vehicles are driven in heavy rain or deep puddles.

According to the NHTSA’s notice regarding the Mazda recalls, when these vehicles are driven in wet conditions, the alternator belt may slip and cause the Power Control module (PCM) to assume that the regenerative charging system has failed.

When the PCM assumes failure for the charging system, the vehicle will stop charging altogether. This could lead to poor acceleration, loss of steering assist and windshield wiper operation (particularly hazardous given the conditions in which this problem occurs), and engine stalling.

Naturally, this isn’t a minor issue by any stretch, particularly with wet conditions being very much the norm in the early months of spring, so you will want to get this taken care of immediately if you are the owner of one of these models. The recall should be underway now, with owners receiving notice from Mazda to take their vehicles to a dealership for a free software update.
