2017 Mazda CX-5

Mazda has announced its sales numbers for October 2017 and it’s starting to feel like we’re reporting the same sales story each month (except for last month, that is).

Overall, sales are somewhat down. In October, Mazda North American Operations sold 20,811 vehicles, which is a decrease of 8.4% from last October. Mazda is also slightly down in year-to-date sales, with a total of 241,108 vehicles, down 2.4% compared to last year at the same time.

This is thanks to the continued lower sales of the brand’s smaller vehicles (except for the Miata, but we’ll come back to that). For example, Mazda sold 4,534 Mazda3 models, which is a drop of 34.7% from last year’s sales. The larger Mazda6 also saw a drop to 2,125 units, which is a decrease of 27.1% compared to last October. Finally, Mazda’s smallest SUV, the CX-3, saw some sales difficulties as well, dropping 17.5% from last year to 1,278 units sold.

However, on the flip side, Mazda’s two biggest vehicles are doing exceptional. The flagship CX-9 saw a 7% upward bump in sales to 1,971 units, while the CX-5 continued its record sales blitz with an increase of 15.3% to 10,306 units. As always, most people who bought any of Mazda’s SUVs (including the CX-3) opted for the brand’s iACTIV all-wheel drive system, making up 63.5% of SUV sales.

As it has for several months, the MX-5 Miata made a healthy sales bump for October, with 597 sales, an 18.2% increase over last year.

Mazda’s Certified Pre-Owned program has also continued its rise, with a huge increase of 31.6%, year over year, with total sales of 3,299 vehicles.

Meanwhile, Mazda Motor de Mexico has reported yet another good sales month, moving 4,510 vehicles for a 2.3% increase over last year.
