History of the Mazda Logo

As August comes to a close and people start gearing up for fall, there is one thing in particular on many car manufacturers’ minds: “How did we do?”

Well, for Mazda North American Operations, the news is a bit of good and a bit of bad.

Overall, Mazda sales dropped 12.8% compared to August of last year with a total of 26,109 vehicles sold. This is also true of the brand’s year-to-date sales, which for this year have reached 199,378 vehicles sold, where last year that total was 216,090 in August. This is indicative of the sales slowdown that the entire industry has been seeing lately as the market becomes more and more saturated.

More specifically, the vehicles that saw a decrease in sales year-over-year for the month were the Mazda2 (no longer made for the US, but 5 were sold last August), the Mazda3 (down 28.2% at 7,297 sales, compared to 10,161 last August), the Mazda5 (also no longer made for the US, but 16 were sold compared to 542 last year), the Mazda6 (down 25.8% from 5,402 last August to 4,006 this August), and the MX-5 Miata (down 38.8% from 1,344 last August to 823 this August).

2016 Mazda CX-9

If you are talking SUVs, though, business is great, with all three of Mazda’s crossovers showing sales growth, with the CX-3 gaining 113.8% from 698 last August to 1,492 this August, the CX-5 growing 5.8% from 10,033 last August to 10,612 this August, and the CX-9 showing 6.3% growth from 1,753 last August to 1,863 this August. On top of that, Mazda’s i-ACTIV All-Wheel Drive system continues to drive buyers to the brand’s crossover lineup, with 65% of all buyers opting to install the system.

2016 Mazda MX-5 Top Down

When it comes to year-to-date sales, the MX-5 and CX-9 actually switch places, with the Miata showing a year-to-date year-over-year growth of 38.2% from 5,128 last year to 7,088 this year, and the CX-9 dropping by the same percentage from 12,601 last year to 7,787 this year. This makes sense for the CX-9, however, as buyer would hold back a few months at the beginning of the year in anticipation of the newly-introduced CX-9 which was announced in November of last year.
