The CX-9 is gaining ground in 2017

While other vehicle brands are suffering significant sales declines at the beginning of 2017, Mazda is experiencing quite the impressive sales climb. In fact, Mazda just wrapped up its best month of March since 2008, before the automotive recession struck the industry.

At the end of the first quarter of 2017, Mazda sales are up 6.8%.

Much of this success can be attributed to the growing popularity of larger SUVs. CX-5 sales have maintained a healthy momentum in 2017, while the sales of CX-9 models are rapidly on the rise.

At the end of March, Mazda sold 24,549 vehicles, an improvement over the 23,396 units it sold during March of last year. Overall, Mazda experienced a 4.9% increase in sales for March of 2017, when compared to March 2016.

The Miata continues to be a popular Mazda model

By far, the most impressive sales increase was experienced by the Mazda CX-9. Mazda’s new SUV sold 2,550 units last month, as compared to the 117 units it sold this time last year.

Meanwhile, the Miata has grown in popularity as well. Sales for the Mazda MX-5 Miata were up 23.4% compared to March of last year.

Of course, March was a bit of an anomaly for two of Mazda’s most popular models: the Mazda6 and the Mazda CX-5. Mazda6 sales were down by 7.3% in March, while CX-5 sales were down by 5.5%.

This is quite odd, as the sales for both models have been on the rise during the rest of 2017. At the end of the first quarter, sales for the Mazda6 were up 4%, while sales for the CX-5, Mazda’s best-selling model, were up 3.2%.

Mazda CX-3 in Dynamic Blue

While the CX-9 has prospered, the CX-3 has suffered

As the larger SUVs in Mazda’s lineup have grown more popular, the Mazda CX-3 has suffered quite a bit. Between March of 2016 and March of 2017, CX-3 sales decreased 28.4%.

Overall, Mazda has sold 69,071 vehicles so far this year. When compared to the 64,644 vehicles sold in the first quarter of 2016, this accounts for a 6.8% increase in sales for the Mazda brand.
