2017 VW e-Golf

Volkswagen is really making sure that the American public realizes how committed it is to electric cars. At this month’s Automobility LA, previously (and in some circles currently) known as the LA Auto Show, the German automaker unveiled its latest generation of e-Golf electric car. The 2017 model has been upgraded to make it a more serious contender in the EV market for drivers looking to lessen their impact on the environment and save money in the long run on fueling costs.

One of the most important new features is a new lithium ion battery, which increases the car’s range by about 50% (depending on driving conditions). The previous model’s energy capacity was 24.2 kWh, and this new model will have a capacity of 35.8 kWh so that the car can hopefully drive up to 124 miles on just one charge.

Besides a new battery, the electric motor has achieved its own power boost to 134 horsepower and 214 lb-ft of torque. That’s 19 more horsepower and 15 more lb-ft than the previous generation of VW e-Golf.

The e-Golf will also be reportedly be available with VW’s latest round of safety features, such as Forward Collision Warning with Autonomous Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Lane Assist. Other technology that’s slightly more fun, like the available Volkswagen Digital Cockpit and Discover Pro infotainment system, will come on board in the 2017 model year.

In the press release from VW, there is no indication as to when shoppers can expect to see the new vehicle on dealership lots. We’ll keep you informed on The News Wheel as we learn more.
