Oh, so four-door coupes are actually a thing? Okay, well when is a four-door coupe not really a coupe? When it’s actually an SUV.
Seriously? Okay, fine. Just go ahead and start making double cab pickup trucks and calling them sedans, then. What good are categories if you can’t even follow them properly?
In any case, you’re getting your first look at the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe, which has more than enough names that it leads you to believe that the whole coupe designation would have been inconspicuous if absent.
So what is it? It’s Mercedes’ sleek answer to the BMW X6, which is also something of a beautiful Frankenstein’s monster in and of itself. The GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe ups the ante with a biturbo V6 that generates 362 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque and comes mated to a burly 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission, trumping the X6’s 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque from a paddle-shift eight-speed auto.
The GLE 450 AMG 4MATIC Coupe will come with 40/60 AWD and five available (all-caps) driving modes—INDIVIDUAL, COMFORT, SLIPPERY, SPORT and SPORT+.

The new GLE may not truly be any one thing—not totally an SUV, not totally a coupe, not totally a sports car—but it definitely looks to be one thing for certain: fun to drive.
