Mercedes-Benz Year-to-Date Sales Down by 1.2% After 7% Sales Decline in May
Strong sales for the Mercedes fleet of vans could not counteract negative sales for the brand as a whole

In recent months, Mercedes-Benz has been able to achieve some rather impressive sales figures, even outmatching rival luxury automaker BMW. However, last month that series of sales increases came to a sudden stop when Mercedes sales decreased by 8.7%.
That downward spiral didn’t show signs of stopping in May, as May sales for Mercedes-Benz were down 7%.
Mercedes Sales in the Month of May: Mercedes-Benz May Sales 12.9% Higher than April
The Mercedes marque itself sold a total of 26,893 units last month. When compared to the 29,299 Mercedes models sold in May 2016, the sales loss for Mercedes equaled 8.2%.
The Mercedes model with the most significant sales loss last month was the GLA. In a market continually growing fonder of SUVs, sales for the GLA were surprisingly down a massive 50.8%.

Still, the GLA is doing considerably better compared to the Mercedes-Benz CLA in terms of year-to-date sales. The CLA’s 43.3% May sales decline nearly matched its 43.6% year-to-date sales decline.
However, it’s not all bad news for every vehicle in the Mercedes lineup. The Mercedes GLE experienced a 15.7% increase in sales last month, raising its year-to-date sales performance to 6.5%.
May was a good month for the Mercedes-Benz GLE
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class remains the best-selling model in the Mercedes family. 6,996 C-Class sedans and coupes were sold last month, and with 35,436 units sold so far this year, sales of the C-Class are up 16.4% so far this year.
A strong sales performance by the fleet of Mercedes vans was able to help the brand’s overall performance. Sales for this fleet of vehicles were up 7.7% last month.
Nevertheless, smart brand vehicle sales were rather negative. Only 331 smart vehicles were sold in May, accounting for a 21.2% sales decrease when compared to a year prior.

In the end, 30,290 vehicles from Mercedes-Benz brands were sold in May, resulting in the automaker’s 7% sales decline for the moth. Due to these results, year-to-date sales for the brand are now in the negative, with a 1.2% sales decrease.
