In what’s turned out to be quite the exciting day at the North American International Auto Show, MINI took the stage this afternoon for the world premiere of the John Cooper Works Hardtop, which features the most powerful engine ever installed in a production vehicle for MINI. That engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder which churns out 228 bhp and 236 lb-ft of torque. It’s capable of moving the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.9 seconds when equipped with an automatic gearbox; 6.1 seconds with manual.

Before the MINI John Cooper Works Hardtop appeared on-stage, David Duncan, MINI of the Americas’ VP, talked about MINI’s racing heritage, and even featured the 1966 Mini Cooper S, which won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1967. Duncan also announced a new partnership with LAP Motorsports that will see MINI competing in the Street Tuner (ST) class of the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge.

Once it was unveiled, the John Cooper Works Hardtop drove onto the stage right next to the classic Mini Cooper S, allowing spectators to see the differences—and similarities—between the two vehicles. Certainly, MINI has a rich history in the world of racing, and this new car is set to continue the legacy into the foreseeable future.

“This is undoubtedly an exciting time at MINI as we relaunch the John Cooper Works sub-brand as a true model in itself and with the most powerful engine we’ve ever had in a production model MINI,” remarked Duncan. “The new MINI John Cooper Works Hardtop will be an important part of our business moving forward, offering customers a premium high performance vehicle in a small package.”

When it goes on sale in the spring, the car will offer features like 17-inch John Cooper Works light alloy wheels, sports exhaust system, and sports suspension to make it any gearhead’s dream. An aerodynamics kit that includes a model-specific rear spoiler and sport seats with integrated headrests will also be available. The MINI John Cooper Works Hardtop isn’t just about performance and racing though; it’s also a practical everyday car that’s just a hair fancier than your average MINI.
