Mitsubishi has confirmed the North American release date for the 2017 Outlander Plug-In Hybrid

The automotive industry has been waiting for the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid for what feels like forever. After originally debuting as a concept at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show, the eco-friendly utility vehicle was originally slated to arrive in the American marker in 2013. Two years later, and it still hasn’t arrived.

This is about to change, though. Mitsubishi recently confirmed the Outlander Plug-In Hybrid release date and we couldn’t be happier—because it’s going to come sooner, rather than later.

The hybrid crossover will arrive for the 2017 model year, debuting on dealer lots in the spring of 2016. This new model will have a variety of changes, though the battery capacity and motor system will stay the same. Unlike its gasoline-powered sibling, the Outlander Plug-In Hybrid will not have three rows of seats, allowing the hybrid to get a significant increase in fuel efficiency.

The Outlander Plug-In Hybrid uses two electric motors placed in the front and rear of the vehicle. Currently, the European model has an all-electric driving range of 32.5 miles, giving it a combined range of more than 500 miles.

Mitsubishi is hoping that the delay of the plug-in hybrid will make it more popular in the United States, since more consumers want a lot of interior space with high fuel economy numbers.
