2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is unlikely to arrive at United States showrooms before 2018, but already it has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2017 Golden Steering Wheel Award in Germany as one of a dozen vehicles in the highly-competitive Small SUV category.

Each year, Auto Bild—the Germany sister magazine of UK’s Auto Express—identifies and nominates the best new cars across five different categories (Large SUVs, Saloon Cars, Small Cars, Small SUVs, and Sports Cars). The finalists are then tested and judged by an expert panel representing Germany, the UK, and France. Regular non-experts can participate as well by voting online.

Despite being about half a year away from launch, the upcoming Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has already earned heaps of attention after its global unveiling at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show, though not always for the right reasons: many feel the Eclipse name, originally used for the brand’s popular sports car, should not have been revived on a crossover.

“The Eclipse Cross has generated a huge amount of interest and this nomination proves just how eagerly awaited it is as well as the impact it is destined to have on its segment. It’s already amassed thousands of admirers and we’re looking forward to seeing their enthusiasm turn into a lot of votes,” said Lance Bradley, Managing Director, Mitsubishi Motors in the UK.
