Mitsubishi recently announced it would soon begin to debut production models instead of concepts, as opposed to what it has done for the last two years, but already the Japanese company is making an exception.

On Thursday, November 17, the Mitsubishi eX Concept will make its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Maybe that doesn’t count as an exception because it has in fact already been shown twice before at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show and the 2016 Paris Motor Show.

Perhaps Mitsubishi believes Americans have yet to see the concept and that it has to be shown once again; and to be fair, it’s a rather important one relative to the automaker’s future.

The “eX” in the name stands for “electric X (cross)-over” according to Mitsubishi. It is powered by front and rear electric motors that each produce 94 horsepower drawn from a 45-kWh lithium-ion battery. It essentially represents everything that Mitsubishi has been working toward over the past few years: a totally green crossover SUV.

It also comes with a revised version of the brand’s signature Dynamic Shield front design as well as a “floating roof” that we think makes it one of the better looking concepts to recently come out of Mitsubishi’s design team. What’s especially notable is the lack of center pillars, which makes the eX look significantly more spacious and comfortable.

Should the eX Concept be converted into a production model, it would be positioned right below the Mitsubishi ASX and compete with the Nissan Juke. If the production model were able to maintain the concept’s 400 miles of range, there’s no doubt it would be a killer addition to automaker’s lineup.
