Next-Generation Mitsubishi MPV

Mitsubishi has given us the first few glimpses of the new MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) it intends to launch at the upcoming 25th GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), which will take place from August 10 to August 20.

Though previously referred to as the Expander, Mitsubishi has not yet revealed the official name of the new vehicle and is simply referring to it as the “Next-Generation MPV” for the time being.

According to the automaker, said Next-Generation MPV will “combine the best of both SUV and MPV worlds: ruggedness and roominess, character and convenience, style and function, all in a bold design that could impress all around the world.”

Based on its exterior design, it’s clear the MPV was inspired by one of the many concept cars Mitsubishi launched over the last few years, in particular the Ground Tourer PHEV Concept (also known as the GT-PHEV) that was first unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.

The MPV will seat up to seven occupants while delivering class-leading roominess and utility and embracing Japanese monozukuri craftsmanship. Under the hood will be a 1.5-liter engine with a manual or automatic transmission.

“Launching its Next-Generation MPV, [Mitsubishi Motors Corporation] enters the booming Indonesian MPV market with an irresistible offer: the best of both MPV and SUV worlds, elegantly styled, cleverly packaged, and competitively priced.”

With already multiple SUVs planned for North American launch, it’s certain to say the Next-Generation MPV won’t be sold on this side of the Pacific, though we can likely expect some parts to be shared.
