An Outlander PHEV was the 5 millionth vehicle built at the Mitsubishi Nagoya Plant

Mitsubishi’s Nagoya Plant, its second largest manufacturing plant in Japan, produced its five millionth vehicle in the form of a Outlander PHEV at the beginning of December. Mitsubishi celebrated the monumental occasion with a ceremony at the plant—located in Okazaki City in the Aichi prefecture—that was attended by Mayor Yasuhiro Uchida among others.

Said Mitsubishi Motors Corporation President and COO Tetsuro Aikawa:

“The Okazaki Plant has been producing MMC’s major products since it started production of the Lancer Celeste and Galant Lambda in 1977. The plant has been playing an important role not only as one of major production plants in Japan, but also as a mother plant for overseas production hubs. The Outlander PHEV is the world’s first and only four-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid SUV, can supply energy from its drive battery to power appliances and such. I think the model would be a great help in supporting the city’s activities in the case of a disaster. We aim to make the Okazaki Plant a plant to serve beneficial purpose not only in Japan but for all over the world by producing products that contribute to our society like the Outlander PHEV.”

During the ceremony, Aikawa presented Mayor Uchida with the keys to the historic Outlander PHEV.

The Nagoya Plant is one of three production centers that Mitsubishi operates in its native country and is located adjacent to the global Mitsubishi Research and Development center. The plant originally opened in 1977 and currently employs 1,577 men and women.

Models produced at the Nagoya Plant include Outlander PHEV, Outlander, and RVR (otherwise known as Outlander Sport).
