The upcoming crossover will be based on the Mitsubishi XR-PHEV II Concept

Mitsubishi is preparing to unveil a new crossover at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March that will rival the Nissan Qashqai (which is soon coming to the United States as the Nissan Rogue Sport).

According to Autocar, the new crossover will slot between the Outlander and the ASX (the Outlander Sport in the US) in the automaker’s range.

Supposedly, its design will be much sleeker than the other SUVs and crossovers in Mitsubishi’s lineup, inspired by the XR-PHEV II concept that was revealed two years ago, also at the Geneva Motor Show. Major visual cues include a heavily-tapered roof and rear window as well as various sporty touches and an even more stylish front end.

Whether Mitsubishi’s upcoming offering will truly “rival” the Nissan Qashqai is doubtful given that Nissan now owns its fellow Japanese automaker, which means that any Qashqai sale lost to the XR-PHEV II-inspired crossover will not truly be lost, just as it makes no financial difference whether you buy a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 or a GMC Sierra 1500—the models are just about identical in all but style and the money goes to GM either way.

In fact, it’s likely the upcoming Mitsubishi model will be powered by some of the same technology found under the hood of the Nissan Qashqai, or vice versa, depending on how quickly the two automakers have managed to get the ball rolling with its plan to share platforms and various powertrain technologies.

In any case, it will be nice to see Mitsubishi finally reveal something that isn’t just a new concept for the first time in a long while.
