Mitsubishi hasn’t sold a truck in the United States since they offered that rebadged Dodge Dakota, and Americans love to buy trucks. What gives, Mitsubishi?

Take the compact Mitsubishi Triton pickup, for example. It’s sold in 140 markets around the globe with the exception of Canada, Japan, China, Korea, and AMERICA.

One could argue that compact and midsize pickups are making a comeback in the United States with the return of the Colorado and Canyon from General Motors and an updated Nissan Frontier on the way. The Triton is automatically better than these because it offers a 5-speed manual and a 2.5-liter turbo diesel engine. Nissan is bringing back the diesel to the pickup world in the 2016 Titan, so there’s clearly a market for smaller diesel pickups. Mitsubishi may be missing an opportunity to take advantage of this niche and take a bite out of the brutally competitive US pickup truck market.

Unless they change their mind over at Mitsubishi, you’ll have to wait until 2030 to legally import one, and the steering wheel could very possibly be on the right (wrong) side, which will be sure to freak out your passengers.
