In the 1990 smash hit “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” by C+C Music Factory, vocalist Martha Wash famously commands everybody to dance, now. Evidently, even though fans of ’90s dance numbers can let the rhythm move them, they can’t burst out into song if they live in Montreal.

That’s precisely what Taoufik Moalla did, which resulted in a $149 ticket for him.

America’s Own Weird Laws: Weirdest driving laws in America

On a late September day, Moalla, a true ’90s kid at heart, was driving down the road, belting out the lyrics to his favorite song, which just so happened to be “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now).” The Montreal resident was obviously too good at mimicking Martha Wash’s high-note lyrics, as his singing caught the attention of some nearby officers.

The police pulled Moalla over, and asked him if he had screamed loudly moments before, a troublesome sound to be hearing out of a vehicle. Moalla explained that he was merely overtaken by the desire to sing along with his favorite dance ballad.

If you need a nostalgic refresher of the 1990 hit, you can view the music video down below:

However, the four Montreal officers did not share his passion for C+C Music Factory. Instead, they handed him a $149 ticket, issued for “screaming in public.”

Moalla was understandably upset with the charge. In fact, he has taken to contesting the ticket, currently waiting to hear back about the status of the case.

“I was singing loudly in my car,” Moalla declares. “Is there something that forbids that, or did I really bother anyone?”

A $149 ticket does seem more than a little extreme for singing along to “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now).” Instead, such punishments are better reserved for those who sing along to Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch’s “Good Vibrations.”
