Could We Get a Mustang-Based Lincoln? “Sure,” Says VanDyke

Could there be a Mustang-based Lincoln in the future?

Lincoln is halfway through its obligation to introduce four all-new vehicles by 2016 with the previous launch of the 2013 Lincoln MKZ and the recent release of the 2015 MKC. According to Matt VanDyke, Lincoln’s global head of marketing, sales, and service, the possibilities for the new Lincoln models are pretty well endless, and even a Mustang-based Lincoln is being considered for production.

“We know we need added nameplates,” VanDyke told Edmunds in an interview. “We know that we need to get into other segments with other vehicles.” When asked if this included a possible Mustang-based Lincoln, VanDyke replied, “Sure. We won’t rule anything out.”

Let’s face it: despite the early success of the MKC, Lincoln needs a homerun hitter, and a RWD luxury sports car could have all the elements necessary toward that end. While VanDyke wouldn’t rule out the idea, it seems far more plausible that Lincoln would move in a greener direction with a plug-in hybrid or EV to compete with models such as the BMW i3 or i8.

How could Lincoln differentiate their Mustang from the Ford Mustang? Well, why not integrate stylistic elements consistent with the soon-to-be-gone Ford Falcon GT? While we’re at the practice of conjecture, how’s this for an idea: a modern take on the old Continental land boats. Or a Lincoln F-150 (L-150?).

“We have a very great understanding that we are in an extremely, extremely competitive segment of the automotive industry,” VanDyke told Edmunds. “So we don’t think that four new products in four years means that we can sit back, take a break and rest. It is absolutely the beginning, it is the foundation.”
