Mazda’s SKYACTIV powers the 2014 Mazda6

To create a unique and identifiable brand, companies often need to create equally unique and identifiable names.  Think back to a time before Google was both a noun and a verb—back when it was just a strange word people often confused with goggles.   Similarly, there was once a time where names like iPod, Twitter, and Amazon would have registered only as oddities—or only as the name of the second largest river in the world and the lush jungle that encompasses it in the case of the latter.

Mazda, on the heels of strong May sales, are looking to create a unique brand with their uniquely-named SKYACTIV technology.  SKYACTIV, available in the 2014 Mazda6 and some incarnations of the Mazda3 and the CX-5, is Mazda’s foray into eco-friendly tech.

SKYACTIV engines focus on higher compression ratios, greater engine efficiency, and improved combustion.  SKYACTIV transmissions boast improved torque transfer efficiency, reduced weight, and a 4-to-7% increase in fuel efficiency.  Mazda’s focus, which sets them apart from other manufacturers, is environmental conscientiousness and better fuel economy without implementing EV or hybrid technology.

With so many options and new technologies in the automotive industry, perhaps Mazda is on to something in providing its revolutionary tech with a somewhat-odd name.  It’s fair to assume that Mazda’s only priority is making SKYACTIV the first name in eco-friendly automotive.
