Team Chevy driver Kevin Harvick managed to edge Carl Edwards’ racecar by just 0.01 seconds in order to win Sunday’s race at Phoenix International Raceway.

Harvick dominated the second half of the race, as his No. 4 Chevrolet SS led 139 of the 313 total laps, but a caution flag was waved with only six laps remaining due to Kasey Kahne’s crash. That caution bunched together all of the drivers and forced the race into overtime.

Popular Chevy driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. was just behind Harvick for the final restart, but he couldn’t hold off the drivers behind him with fresher tires.

Carl Edwards decided to add right-side tires to his racecar on the final pit stop, which allowed him to quickly pass Earnhardt Jr. Edwards got all the way to the back of Harvick’s racecar and attempted to pass his Chevrolet in the final corner, but the two cars collided twice, which halted Edwards momentum, allowing Harvick to cross the finish line just 0.01 seconds ahead of Edwards.

“That’s really what NASCAR racing is all about,” Harvick told ESPN after the race. “You’re coming to the checkered flag, and he wants to win for his team, and I want to win for my team. There’s a lot on the line.”

Daytona 500 champion Denny Hamlin finished the race in third, followed by 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Kyle Busch. Earnhardt Jr. ended up as the fifth place finisher.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup series will be back in action on Sunday, March 20th, when Jimmie Johnson, Danica Patrick, and the rest of the drivers will be competing at Fontana’s Auto Club Speedway. The race is scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm and will be broadcast by Fox.
