The 2016 racing season is off to a much better start for defending NASCAR champion Kyle Busch, especially when you consider that at this time a year ago, he was nursing serious injuries that he sustained in a violent crash at Daytona.

The 31-year-old Busch was able to drive his No. 18 Toyota Camry to his third victory of the 2016 season and the win also gave Busch his first taste of victory lane in Kansas City. In fact, the only two tracks that Busch has yet to win at are Charlotte and Pocono.

“I didn’t know we’d have that much speed in our race car. I guess I should have known,” Busch told the Associated Press. “We had a top-five car in the middle part of the race. We kept making improvements to it, kept making it better.”

The car that Busch was chasing for most of the race was the No. 78 Toyota Camry driven by Martin Truex Jr, but after leading 172 of the race’s 267 laps, a tire problem forced Truex Jr. to travel down pit road and he was only able to achieve a 14th place finish.

NASCAR icon Tony Stewart also led late in the race, but a caution brought the field back together and Busch was able to get out front for the victory. Chevrolet drivers Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch finished second and third, respectively. Matt Kenseth had his best finish on the season in fourth and Ryan Blaney was the highest placing Ford driver in fifth. Fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished the race in 15th.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will be in action again on May 15th when the drivers are scheduled to circle Dover International Speedway. The race will be broadcast by FS1 and is scheduled to begin at 1pm.
