Most race fans have been looking forward to May in anticipation of the 99th running of the Indy 500 in Indianapolis, but that’s not the only big motorsports event this month. On Saturday, May 2nd, the National Corvette Museum (NCM) in Bowling Green, Kentucky, hosted the 21st annual Mini Corvette Challenge.

Sponsored by Junior Achievement, a local organization that provides life-changing economics programs for students, the Mini Corvette Challenge has raised more than $550,000 since it first began back in 1995.

Here’s some heart-racing footage from last year’s event:

This year’s competition featured custom Corvette go-karts driven by about twenty different teams, made up of two to four drivers each, plus a pit crew. To allow everyone a chance to participate, each team had to make a designated pit stop during the race and change both the driver and a single tire.

The teams raced each other in multiple heats to their positions in the final three races for the “Gold Cup.”

Each race team was partered with an area school, enabling nearby students to participate in the fun. The school with the most students and faculty in attendance actually won $500, the coveted Papa John’s Pride Cup, and a free pizza party from Papa John’s.

Between their Mini Corvette Challenge and their STEM-themed summer camp, NCM is starting to give Walt Disney World a run for its money (if you’re a kid who loves cars, that is).
