If you’re in the state of New York and not in the Big Apple, odds are you’re in Buffalo. The Queen City is the second most populous in the state, making it an important tourist attraction for anyone with an interest in architecture, cuisine, music, festivals, performance arts, sports, or the outdoors.

Recommended Modes of Transportation

Though the city offers a sturdy public transportation system via a single-line light rail system and extensive bus network, service is not always easily accessible. That means that to get where you want to go, when you want to be there, you’ll need a car.

Major Highways and Roadways to Know

If you’re coming from the east or west, the best way to get to Buffalo is I-90, which connects the city to other major cities and regions. It links up with I-190, which circles partly around downtown before heading up to Niagara Falls. I-290 closes the loop.

Best Places to Park

Because driving is the best way to get around Buffalo, you’ll need to find places to park. The downtown area is full of parking garages, lots, and pay meters, though many of these can be expensive. We recommend using services like BestParking.com or Pay2Park.net to find the best places to park—and the best deals—should you be heading downtown.

Airports and Car Rentals

Going to or from Buffalo by plane means using the Buffalo Niagara International Airport, which provides nonstop service to 18 cities. About 40% of the people you’ll meet will be Canadian, so be prepared to talk about hockey. From the airport, you can reach Buffalo via four NFTA bus routes; we recommend Metro Bus #24B – Genesee, the most active of the lot.
