2014 Chevy Silverado for Achilles Freedom Team

The Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans gained another team member this past weekend in the form of a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado High Country 1500 crew cab pickup truck. During the 114th Army-Navy Game, GM Chariman and CEO, Dan Akerson, presented Achilles International founder, Dick Traum, and Achilles team members with the truck.

While the pickup might not be able to ride a hand cycle as well as the Achilles Freedom Team does, the new member will be able to haul the team’s equipment to Walter Reed-Bethesday Naval Center for training and to regional competitions.

“This Silverado is capable of amazing things, but I can’t think of a higher calling for it than helping wounded veterans rebuild their lives,” said Dan Akerson, GM Chairman and CEO.

Since the introduction of the Achilles Freedom Team, over 1,000 veterans wounded in battle have overcome their injuries, allowing them to participate in marathons and other athletic events. The addition of the 2014 Silverado will enable them to reach their events quickly without worrying about damage to their hand cycles in transport.

During last year’s Army-Navy Game, the Achilles Freedom Team was presented with two prototype hand cycles developed by Chevrolet and senior engineering students at Michigan Technological University, meeting the specific design needs for wounded athletes.
