All-New ASIMO will see you in your dreams

The last time we saw ASIMO, Honda’s humanoid robot dude, he was kicking a soccer ball with President Barack Obama and showing off his advanced dance skills. The All-New ASIMO turned up in Brussels on Friday for his first-ever European appearance at a press conference at the ASMIO Studio in Belgium.

The All-New ASIMO boasts a number of improvements over previous iterations (which shall heretofore be known as the All-Old ASIMO), including improved artificial intelligence; the ability to express through sign language, open a bottle, and pour a drink; the ability to run faster and run backwards; the ability to ascend and descend stairs fluidly; and the ability to jump. Finally, in the year 2014, we have a robot that can effectively obey the mandate first issued by noted Spandex pioneer David Lee Roth 30 years ago.

Honda also debuted the UNI-CUB β in Europe. UNI-CUB β, for the uninitiated, is a personal mobility device that uses Honda’s omni-directional driving wheel system and balance control technology. As is the case with the All-New ASIMO, UNI-CUB β is intended for assisting individuals with special needs.

The original ASIMO (All-Old ASIMO, as stated) debuted in Europe in 2003 at the “From High Tech to Intelligence – The Challenge of Humanoid Robots” symposium held at the Technical University of Darmstadt.
