All-new Chevy Trax small SUV joins Chevy’s small vehicle lineup.

At the New York International Auto Show last month, Chevrolet unveiled the all-new Chevy Trax small SUV to be added to Chevy’s growing small car lineup in the United States, as well as in China. General Motors believes this is a strong move, as the company predicts that demand for small SUVs could grow by 2 million units over the course of the next few years. Already, the Bowtie Brand has sold 90,000 Trax vehicles in 60 countries since it launched nearly two years ago.

“The Trax truly rounds out Chevrolet’s already very-strong small car portfolio,” commented Alan Batey, General Motors senior vice president, Global Chevrolet. “Demand for a vehicle with huge capability in a small footprint is on the rise, and the Trax is a perfect fit that offers the latest technology and a bold design with versatility to match.”

Karl Brauer, senior analyst for Kelley Blue Book, agrees with GM’s move toward a smaller but still flexible lineup: “The small CUV’s combination of style, fuel efficiency and flexibility will lead to increased consumer demand over the next several years. We’re seeing small CUVs replacing compact and mid-size sedans on many shoppers’ consideration lists.”

Seven small cars have joined Chevy’s lineup over the last four years. Over those very four years, Chevy’s market share (small, compact, and mini segments) has more than tripled, thanks to the Spark, Sonic, and Cruze.

The 2015 Trax is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine that will likely be rated at 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a Hydra-Matic 6T40 six-speed automatic gearbox with TAPShift control. All-wheel drive is available.

Safety is a number one priority for the Trax, which boasts 10 standard airbags, more than any competitors in the segment. In fact, the Trax is something of a standout in its segment; it is the only one to offer a rear-seat-mounted thorax airbag. A rearview camera is standard while park assist is optional.

Unique to the segment is the Trax’s seven-inch color touchscreen, part of the MyLink infotainment system. This system also features a 4G LTE connection from OnStar. Drivers of the Chevy Trax small SUV will also have access to Siri Eyes Free and BringGo dash navigation.

The exterior of the Trax is marked by a signature dual-port grille and chrome accents. The interior features 43.1 cubic feet of cargo space, so that items even eight feet in length—like a ladder or a napping Yao Ming—can be stored in the passenger compartment.
