New Jersey Grandmother Acted As Getaway Driver for Grandson
Ok, we understand that, as a grandparent, you will want to connect with your grandchildren as much as possible, but there is such a thing as going too far.
Stepping way over that line is 78-year-old Vera Buniak, who acted as the getaway driver for her 18-year-old grandson Timothy and his 24-year-old friend Melanie Coviello, who robbed a house and high tailed it with $4,000 in electronic equipment, including a Nintendo Wii and several video games.
Officers pulled over the car after a neighbor called the police and gave them a description of the vehicle and the license plate number. Upon searching the car, police found the Wii, games and other items, as well as heroin and a hypodermic needle.
It is unclear whether Vera was aware that her grandson and his friend had just robbed a house.
“Whether they duped her, I couldn’t say,” said Rockaway Township Police Lt. Peter Reilly. “But she was used.”
The grandmother was charged with possession of stolen property and released on her own recognizance. Her grandson and his friend faced the same charge, plus burglary and theft, as well as a charge of possession of a controlled substance for the grandson. The pair are being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
