The auto industry is cranking out small, turbocharged engines at a record pace to keep up with increasingly strict emissions regulations. The latest comes from Kia, which today announced a new 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder motor mill that’s set to debut in the Cee’d GT Line at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show on March 3, 2015.

Designed exclusively for the European market, the new Kia 1.0-liter engine yields 118 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque in the Cee’d, which goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2015. After that, the “1.0-litre T-GDi engine will be made available on a range of other Kia models in future,” the automaker stated (though none here in the States, it seems).

Kia expects the new motor to produce 10-15% better fuel efficiency ratings than the Cee’d’s current 1.6-liter, direct-injected four-cylinder engine. To produce those results, the Korean automaker used brand new laser-drilled injectors for more efficient combustion; a single-scroll turbocharger paired with an electric scavenging system that scavenges for clean air used for combustion; and innovative dual-thermostat cooling for the cylinder heads and engine blocks.
