The New Mitsubishi Triton

Mitsubishi today unveiled the all-new Triton pickup truck for Thailand, which will likely also serve as the basis for the pickup truck that will result from an MoU signed with Fiat in September. While it doesn’t quite look as unique as what could have been, it nonetheless has the makings of something that might be of some eminent appeal to commercial fleet owners in the US.

Mitsubishi says that the Triton has been developed to take the mantle of “Ultimate Sport Utility Truck,” and is available in three body types and with three engines. Body types include: Single Cab, Double Cab, and Club Cab.

The engines will be anchored by the all-new 2.4-liter MIVEC turbodiesel, which joins the 2.5-liter turbodiesel and the 2.4-liter gasoline engines that were available in the previous model.

Said Mitsubishi Chairman and CEO Osamu Masuko:

“The previous Triton was launched in August of 2005 and has sold a total of 1,260,000 units worldwide as of September of this year. The Triton is one of our most important products since it contributed the most to our revitalization. Just as the previous Triton did we expect the all-new Triton to continue to be our core model, contributing to improving our corporate value and sustainable growth in the future.”

Production of the new Mitsubishi Triton is underway at the Laem Chabang Plant in Thailand, which is responsible for production of the Mirage, Pajero Sport, and Lancer EX. The new Triton is expected to be released in ASEAN, Oceania, Europe, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.
