New Orleans Rapper Dee-1 Still Drives 1998 Honda Accord With 262,000 Miles
New Orleans rapper Dee-1 said in a recent interview with DJ Smallz that he could buy a new Mercedes Benz tomorrow–in cash–if he wanted to, but he chooses to keep driving his 1998 Honda Accord with more than 262,000 miles because he wants to show the youth a person’s success is not defined by their automobile.
“That is my everyday whip,” Dee-1 said during the interview. “When I really want to step out and just stunt on ’em at the club because, you know, I’m Dee-1, so I got to pull up clean. I don’t have that type of whip.”
Dee-1 said he just recently got the radiator fixed on his 1998 Accord, after it started smoking and nearly broke down on the streets of New Orleans, Louisiana. The rapper said he recited a prayer to get home safely and he just made it to his driveway before it shut down. He later had it towed to a mechanic who got it running again.
The 1998 Honda Accord came in seven trim styles: DX 4dr sedan, EX 2dr coupe, EX 4dr sedan, EX V6 2dr coupe, EX V6 4dr sedan, LX 2dr coupe, LX 4dr sedan, LX V6 2dr coupe, and LX V6 4dr sedan. Every trim got at least 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The models equipped with the 3.0-liter V6 engine were capable of producing 200 horsepower.
The New Orleans musician said reactions to his car vary on how well people know him.
“For people that don’t know me and that’s their first public Dee-1 sighting, they look and they’re like that can’t be Dee-1 in that old ugly car,” he said. “Then they go like ‘Is rap not treating you good?'”
