PACE Center opens at Kookmin University in South Korea

Kookmin University was announced today as having been chosen by Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education (PACE) to become the fifth university in the country to build a PACE Center. The decision was announced on Thursday at the university as part of a special ceremony.

PACE is the result of a collaborative effort between General Motors and other corporations to facilitate the growth of talent in the engineering and design fields of automotive development.

“The objective of PACE is to ensure students attain the design and engineering capability that is highly required in the real-world automotive industry,” said Greg Tyus, Vice President of GM International Vehicle Engineering. “We expect the PACE Center to educate more talented students for the industry given that GM is the biggest partner of PACE.”

“Since establishing Korea’s first automotive engineering department in 1992, the university has become the leader in the field, with both automotive IT and automotive design-related departments,” said Ji-soo Yoo, president of Kookmin University. “Through the PACE program, we aim to become a model university for specialized education worldwide.”

The PACE Center will serve as a learning hub for developing talent in the Korean auto industry, providing the opportunity for burgeoning minds to work with equipment and software that may otherwise be unobtainable due to their high costs. Kookmin University was chosen due in no small part to its management of the Reconfigurable Shared-Use Mobility Systems project from August 2014 through this past June, and for its ongoing work with the Personal Urban Mobility Access project.

The first PACE Center in South Korea was established at Hongik Univeristy in 2005, and subsequent centers have been established at Korea University, Sungkyunkwan University, and Inha University. The investment in the PACE Cetner at Kookmin University will be the largest of the bunch, totaling an estimated KRW 465 billion ($397 million USD).
