New Spy Photos of the Toyota Supra Reveal Unexpected Details

Toyota has gone to great lengths to hide the true exterior design of the new Supra

The fifth-generation Toyota Supra has to be one of the most talked about cars on the internet. Whether it’s out testing at the Nürburgring or doing donuts in the snow, the new Supra is a favorite target of spy photographers everywhere and they recently caught it again, but this time it was at a gas station in Germany.

While these photos all but confirm the new Supra’s bubble-top roof, the Toyota team went to great lengths to hide the exterior design of the test mule, as it featured fake body panels on the front and rear fascias to help disguise its shape. In particularly, you can see the rear spoiler is phony, which is masking the Supra’s sloping roofline.

AutoGuide reported that the production version of the Supra is expected to debut at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. However, this has yet to be confirmed officially by Toyota or BMW. We mention BMW because it’s co-developing the new Supra with Toyota. The difference is that BMW’s version will be a convertible model called the Z5.

Another thing about the Supra that remains a mystery is the type of engine that will be powering the two-seater coupe. When the test version of the Supra was filmed at the Nürburgring, many automotive publications speculated that it could feature a hybrid powertrain after listening to the sound of the car. Furthermore, it’s been speculated that a twin-turbo V6 could accompany the higher-end version of the Supra, while a smaller four-cylinder might come with a more affordable variant.

There have also been rumors about a MR2 successor, which could potentially join a fifth-gen Supra and the Toyota 86 in showrooms around the world, but all of this is just speculation at this point. We’ll have to wait until October to see if the Supra even makes an appearance at the Tokyo Motor Show. Remember, the Corvette ZR1 was supposed to make an appearance at the Detroit Auto Show this past January, but was nowhere to be found.
