Last Friday, Subaru announced a partnership with Respond Inc. of Camden to launch its newest initiative: Subaru University. This specific initiative is meant to prepare students for careers at Subaru retailers as technicians. Respond Inc. of Camden is a natural first partnership for Subaru University; as a non-profit, Respond advocates for “economic independence and the welfare of individuals and families.”

Subaru University’s (Subaru-U, for short) Respond Repair Shop opened on Friday, April 29th, in North Camden, as the automaker prepares to relocate its headquarters there. The shop equipment was donated by Subaru, while the university will also incorporate Respond’s automotive training program. Through the program with Subaru-U, students will gain access to web-based training and other tools that will prepare them for ASE Certification and Subaru Maintenance Tech Certification.

“While we’ve only recently broken ground on our future home in Camden, we feel a deep connection to the area and are excited to introduce our first Subaru University partnership, right here in our backyard,” remarked Thomas J. Doll, president and chief operating officer of Subaru of America (and Motor Trend’s first Person of the Year). “Subaru and Respond Inc. share the goal of improving the welfare and employability of the local community and we hope our partnership will lead to increased opportunities for students and potential job placement at local Subaru retailers.”

At Subaru-U, Camden residents will be able to get the entry-level training necessary to be a certified Subaru technician. Subaru also reports that students will be able to do three-month internships in the Respond Repair Shop and Subaru of America Shop in order to gain certification for ASE and Subaru Maintenance Tech.

“We are excited about this new partnership with Subaru University and the opportunities it will open up for Camden residents,” commented Wilbert Mitchell, Executive Director of Respond Inc. “We are also thankful for Subaru’s generosity in equipping our new auto repair shop, which will create jobs and provide a valuable service to the community.”
