The all-new 2018 Chevy Equinox

Offering a much-needed redesign and some new bells and whistles, Chevy’s all-new, trimmed down 2018 Equinox is making waves with a diesel option that makes the compact SUV even more efficient.

Perhaps a curious choice in an American market that’s borderline hostile to diesel vehicles outside of heavy-duty trucks, the switch to a diesel engine enables the Equinox to get an estimated 40 highway mpg.

“We continue to have a positive outlook for diesel technology as it remains the most efficient internal combustion engine option, and diesel technology will continue to be an important solution to achieving fuel economy and CO2 goals in a global economy,” GM spokesman Tom Read told Autoblog about the diesel engine offering.

For those who aren’t desiring diesel, the Equinox offers both a 1.5-liter and a 2.0-liter turbo engine, making the new Equinox Chevrolet’s first model in North America with an all-turbocharged, multi-engine propulsion lineup.

Even without the help of its not-namesake gym, the Equinox is slimmed down for 2018, with a weight loss of about 400 pounds (about a 10 percent reduction in total weight)—which should pay serious dividends for vehicle balance, agility, performance and efficiency.

For drivers who like their cars smart casual, or just like that denim on denim seat-feel, a durable “denim-style” seat fabric is an available interior option.

Chevrolet’s second best selling vehicle after the Silverado, Equinox sales have reached nearly 2 million since its launch, according to the automaker.

Gearheads can get their first looks at the next-gen Equinox November 18-27 at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
