An eagle-eyed spy photographer spotted what appears to be the all-new 2018 Ford Expedition strolling around Dearborn in camouflage this week. The next-generation Expedition is expected to follow the F-150 and Super Duty with an aluminum-alloy body, and the striking visual similarities to the latter certainly suggest as much.

According to Automotive News, an anonymous source from Ford says that the mule photographed by Brian Williams earlier this week is close to the final version of the Expedition that will presumably be revealed sometime by the 2017 North American International Auto Show.

The new Expedition has a number of trademark aesthetics similar to the aluminum-bodied F-150 and Super Duty, and it features a number of flat surfaces that are typically indicative of aluminum. With the F-150 dropping as much as 700 pounds and the 2017 Super Duty dropping upwards of 350 pounds, it’s a fair bet that the new Expedition will be significantly lighter than the current model.

That weight-loss will almost certainly lead to improved fuel economy, though there is no real speculation as to powertrain options as of yet.
