The next-gen Jeep Wrangler is possibly using aluminum in its body construction

Throughout the decades, the rugged Jeep brand has transformed from a military-focused jeep-maker to one of the go-to brands for Americans. While the brand has changed its focus, there is one thing that has remained relatively the same—the Jeep Wrangler. No matter the changes to the Jeep lineup, the Wrangler has been a steadfast member of its lineup with its rugged construction and simple design, barely changing in its style—until now.

We already know that the next-generation Wrangler could offer more powertrain options than ever before, including a diesel and a hybrid variant. It has also been confirmed that a Wrangler-based pickup truck will join Jeep’s lineup. Now, we have even more interesting news that might change the face of this ruggedly handsome icon.

According to a report from JL Wrangler Forums, the entire hood of the next Wrangler—along with the interior of the doors—will be composed of aluminum.

The report, which supposedly came from an employee from metal supplier Alcoa, confirms the use of Alcoa 6022 sheet aluminum for the inside and outside hood, along with the inside and outside of both the front and rear doors.

Aluminum is often used to achieve better fuel economy and efficiency, so this decision isn’t a huge surprise—especially since Jeep has been vying to make the Wrangler more fuel-efficient, adding changes like an eight-speed automatic transmission, a “Hurricane” turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and a mild hybrid system.

Though it’s understandable that Jeep wants to lessen its carbon footprint, we think that the use of aluminum on the Wrangler is going to cause a bit of an uproar amongst the loyal Jeep followers. The report even goes on to predict that this won’t be the only use of aluminum that will appear in the next-gen Wrangler. When it is unveiled in the 2018 model year, keep an eye out for the material’s use in other body and roof components.
