We’re midway through the year, which means one thing in the car world: 2015 models are starting to hit dealerships amid much excitement and anticipation. Green car enthusiasts in particular are getting hyped up for the arrival of the next-generation Toyota Prius, but it looks like those drivers are going to have to contain their excitement for a while longer, as Toyota announces a delay in the production of the popular hybrid vehicle.

Originally, the next-generation Toyota Prius, which will be introduced as a 2016 model, was slated to begin production in the spring of 2015. Now, Toyota has pushed that date back by six months, and we will have to wait until the end of next year before we can get our hands on a next-gen Prius to call our very own. The delay suggests that Toyota is making some tweaks and changes to its current design, perhaps to fix body issues or to work on maximizing fuel efficiency. With recent reports that Toyota is developing new technology to do just that, it’s certainly possible that the automaker could be rethinking its designs to include this new technology and make the Prius—already one of the most efficient offerings on the road—more efficient than ever.

Also slated to arrive on our roads—or at least on California’s roads—next year is the Toyota Fuel Cell Vehicle, or FCV. With the next-generation Toyota Prius and an all-new alternative fuel vehicle on the horizon, the next couple of years are shaping up to be exciting ones for Toyota.
