NISMO wins SUPER GT Championship

In the last round of the 2014 SUPER GT series, Tsugio Matsuda and Ronnie Quintarelli piloted the No. 23 MOTUL AUTECH GT-R to its second win of the season. More importantly, the win was enough to push NISMO over the top to earn the SUPER GT Drivers’ Championship.

The race itself was never in question. Matsuda and Quintarelli started eight in the pole, but quickly took the lead and put enough distance between themselves and the field that they were able to jump back in and retake the lead once more without much difficulty.

When it was all said and done, the No. 23 MOTUL AUTECH GT-R won by a 52 second margin of victory, good enough to take the first SUPER GT Drivers Championship for NISMO in six years.

“I’ve been competing in the SUPER GT for quite some time, and I just haven’t been able to get my hands on a championship so I was starting to think that maybe I had missed my chance,” said Matsuda after the race. “However, all those worries have enabled me to appreciate this moment even more. I want to thank, from the bottom of my heart, everyone in the team who built an incredible car as well as all the fans.”

The No. 23 MOTUL AUTECH GT-R had previously won the AUTOPOLIS GT300 and placed second at the FUJI GT500 and SUZUKA GT500.
