Pride Month Playbill for 'Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812' and the back cover ad from NissanJune is LGBT Pride Month in the United States and organizations around the country are recognizing the occasion with the movement’s rainbow theme. For example, Facebook allows users to react with a rainbow to someone’s posts, the Seattle Space Needle is flying the Pride flag, and Atlanta has announced a permanent rainbow crosswalk. Four years ago, Playbill changed its traditional yellow headers for the first time in its 130 years to a Pride rainbow, and this year the front cover is being matched with a rainbow on the back cover from Nissan USA.

On the top of the back cover ad, the Nissan logo is presented in a red rectangle that is followed by the other colors of the rainbow. The 2017 Nissan Rogue, Nissan’s bestselling car in the US, is the featured vehicle below text that reads “Nissan supports equality on every road you travel.” The ad also has a badge reminding theatregoers that Nissan was named one of the Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality by the Human Rights Campaign in 2017.

We cannot confirm if the Nissan Pride ad is being run on the back cover of all Playbills during the month of June because there has been no press release from Playbill or Nissan, but we do know that the ad is at least widespread. Earlier this month I attended Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 as well as War Paint and both programs featured a Nissan ad on the back cover with rainbow decorations. Twitter users have remarked that the ad also appears on the back of the Kinky Boots Playbill program.

This is not the first time that Nissan has proclaimed its support for LGBT individuals. The Japanese automaker is a regular sponsor for the Gay Softball World Series (GSWS) and this past year earned a perfect score from the Human Rights Campaign. It is one thing to say that you support LGBT rights and it’s quite another to display it proudly in a public space. Thank you, Nissan, and we hope that you continue to step up as the years go on.
