Carlos Ghosn has had quite a busy January. Just last week he spoke about the reveal of the completely new 2016 Nissan Titan at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and the week before he was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to announce production of a new three-cylinder engine. This represents a big step by Nissan Brazil towards market penetration in South America.

The little 1.0-liter mill will power the Nissan New Versa sedan that’s sold in Brazil with 76 horsepower and some of the best energy efficiency of any production engine in the country. The engine has the ability to run on both gas and ethanol.

Production will begin this year, creating 25 new jobs at the Resende Industrial Complex, which will receive a R$ 100 million investment. The complex also produces the Nissan New March and March Active and has the ability to produce 200,000 engines every year. Like many auto manufacturing plants in the US, the plant is built for environmental sustainability. It features natural illumination and ventilation and recycles water for its production processes.
