Nissan Brings Tiny Cars to New York Auto Show

It’s a well-known fact that owning a car in New York City is pretty expensive. After paying to purchase it in the first place, parking spots are available at a premium price and traffic is a nightmare. It makes sense, then, that Nissan is using the New York International Auto Show to display its “micromobility” offerings to the world.
The four small EVs that will be on display at the New York Auto Show are called the Nissan New Mobility Concepts, and were developed by the Nissan Future Lab (these vehicles are known as Scoot Quads in San Francisco). This group of designers and engineers was established in 2014 on the West Coast, and is more focused on the distant future than other components of Nissan’s product planning group. Just to let you in on their mindset, they think decades in the future, rather than a handful of years.

“As large cities continue to grow into megacities globally, we need to better understand how transportation is changing and anticipate what transportation needs will look like in the future,” Nissan Future Lab Director Rachel Nguyen said. “With the fast-paced growth of smart technologies and the emergence of the sharing economy, we are studying how this size and package of electric vehicle fits in real life customer situations.”

Experts have been saying for years that the automotive world is changing, with Millennials less inclined to buy their own cars, yet still needing access to a vehicle when it is absolutely necessary. Nissan has not said if any production versions of the Nissan New Mobility Concepts would only be in car sharing fleets, like the Scoot Quad, or if they would be sold to private individuals. For now, it’s fun to look at these cute cars to imagine how you would use them to tool around a futuristic town.
