One of the key selling points of the Nissan LEAF is that it’s a 100% electric vehicle. Even with charging stations popping up around the nation, many drivers seem to still be concerned about EV range and the possibility of running out of charge while on a longer driving excursion. According to Digital Trends, Nissan is considering adding a small gas generator to soothe those fears and allow them to drive further.

Before Nissan LEAF fans get emotional about gasoline being added to their EVs, Digital Trends continues to assert that Yoshi Shimoida of Nissan’s EV and HEV engineering division says that the current generation of the legendary vehicle would not be equipped with gasoline. That means that Nissan could be building another EV model soon to accommodate the range extender, perhaps a vehicle along the lines of the BMW i3, or the automaker could be considering turning an existing model into an EV.

If Nissan decided to take one of its existing models, like the Nissan Maxima, and make it electric, it would be a departure from Nissan’s usual EV plan. Previously, the automaker has only taken the existing NV 200 commercial van to build an electric trim, but they were only available commercially.

Nissan will be supposedly revealing this new or redesigned model at a major auto show in 2016 for a 2017 release. We’ll keep you informed of any major EV announcements.
