Nissan and Habitat for HumanityNissan is known for being a company committed to community service and the areas in which it does business. The automaker has been a partner of Habitat for Humanity for the past 11 years, and it decided to mark the second decade of the relationship with a $1 million grant to the organization.

Habitat for Humanity and Nissan first began working together in 2005, after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The automaker donated 50 trucks to help in the recovery efforts, and many Nissan volunteers came out to help the Gulf Coast rebuild. Since then, Nissan volunteers have given Habitat for Humanity more than 80,000 volunteer hours and an additional 88 vehicles.

The money donated will go towards growing Habitat’s fleet of work vehicles, which are used to respond to natural disasters and help with recovery. Portions of the donation will also go towards funding homes being built near Nissan facilities. To accompany the funds, Nissan volunteers are set to work on building houses in 12 Habitat communities such as those in Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Dallas, Texas; Phoenix, Arizona; and Aurora, Illinois.

Nissan likes working with Habitat for Humanity because of how the company utilizes volunteer help to build a home, but also because the homeowners are working alongside the Nissan volunteers. Part of Nissan’s mission statement is to “enrich people’s lives,” and it feels that this type of volunteer work helps them accomplish that.

CEO of Habitat for Humanity International Jonathan Reckford said, “We thank Nissan for continuing to give back to communities across the country. We are grateful for their long-term support and commitment to help families build strength, stability and self-reliance.”
